House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D., S.C.) on Friday defended his previous claim that coronavirus is a "tremendous opportunity" to advance Democratic policy goals.
"I find it kind of interesting that one of my colleagues said he has a problem with me because I'm a ‘restructure government' person," Clyburn told Roll Call. "Yes, Jim Clyburn is a restructuring government guy and everybody with any common sense, and looking at where we are today, needs to be a restructuring government person."
Clyburn has taken a prominent role in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D., Calif.) coronavirus response. The speaker tapped the South Carolina Democrat on Thursday to lead her select oversight committee on coronavirus relief, which will monitor the billions in federal dollars spent fighting the pandemic. Top Republicans criticized the decision, pointing to Clyburn's March comments calling the coronavirus "a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision."
"What's most telling here is who [Pelosi] appointed. She didn't go with the oversight committee chair, her own, she appointed Clyburn," House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) said during a Fox News appearance Friday. "And remember what Clyburn said—her majority whip. He said this is a time to restructure into their vision, government. This isn't about oversight, [it] sounds like pure politics."
Clyburn defended his comments in a Friday Roll Call interview, with the South Carolina Democrat comparing America's coronavirus response to World War II.
"I spent some time in the last 24 hours looking at the Truman Committee, looking at the history of it, looking at what went on with it. I think they were very successful," Clyburn said. "We came out of World War II with restructuring some things."
Clyburn also used the coronavirus to tout Democratic priorities on health care, arguing that telehealth expansion could not occur without upending the nation's health care system.
"We gotta have telehealth going forward for these kinds of issues, and to do it we've got to restructure the way we deliver health care in this country," Clyburn said. "That's what we were doing with Medicare and Medicaid, that's what we were doing with the Affordable Care Act—trying to restructure the way health care is delivered in this country."

Impeachment Manager Adam Schiff Wants ‘9/11 Commission’ on Coronavirus: ‘What Went Wrong’?
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said Monday he will introduce a bill to create a “nonpartisan commission” to study “our mistakes” on coronavirus — which spread while Schiff was leading the effort to impeach and remove the president.
Throughout the 20 days of the impeachment trial, while Schiff and his team were preoccupied with trying to remove the president from office, Trump took several actions aimed at fighting the coronavirus.
Trump imposed his travel ban on China Jan. 31 — the day the Senate voted on witnesses in the impeachement trial.
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), one of the only legislators to raise the alarm on coronavirus, told the Arkansas Gazette in January that he was breaking the rules and skipping to trial to work with the administration on the coronavirus issue.
Schiff, as chair of the House Intelligence Committee, receives briefings on threats facing the United States.
His proposed new bill would create a “9/11 Commission”-style inquiry into how the U.S. dealt with coronavirus.
Schiff broke the news of his bill with David Ignatius of the Washington Post — the same columnist who broke the news in January 2017 that incoming National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had spoken with then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Flynn had been “unmasked” in transcripts of wiretapped telephone conversations.
Much of Ignatius’s article on Schiff’s bill focuses on Ambassador Richard Grenell, whom Ignatius accuses — citing “[c]areer officials” — of “trying to shape intelligence that might challenge or embarrass Trump” on coronavirus. Grenell, who served as U.S. ambassador to Germany, was recently named acting Director of National Intelligence.

Dear Congress Members:
This letter is being written in response to your partisan response to how the President is handling the COVID 19 pandemic. We are homebound, without jobs, unable to visit family and friends, and socialize. Many of us are out of work and worried about our bills, our mortgages, our car payments and simply whether we can continue to put food on our tables. Yet, you persist. You divide. You will waste time and money on this committee.
You gave yourselves a payraise in the CARES Act. A payraise?????? You should be giving up your salaries like President Trump does, help come up with a solution to this pandemic. Take care of your districts. Instead, you want to convene a "bipartisan" committee. "Bipartisan?" You are fooling no one. This committee will be "partisan." This will be another Democratic ploy to try to destroy the Presidency.
Americans are scared, worried and suffering. Stop this partisan move. Stop thinking about yourselves. Start thinking about your constituents. Work with the President in a response to COVID19.
Get us out of our houses and back to work.
